Their season has been steered away from chaos, calamity and talk of a seismic managerial change over several months but Arsenal now have tangible proof of progress in the Premier League; a place above Tottenham Hotspur. Arsène Wenger refused to discuss the prospect of Champions League qualification earlier in the season but the prize is within reach once again. Thomas Vermaelen reprised his unlikely role of match-winner by following his late winner against Newcastle United with an early and only goal at Everton. Arsenal succeeded where three of the top five have failed this year in achieving victory at Goodison Park, and the manner of their irrepressible opening, plus more importantly their resilience in the face of a strong Everton recovery, bodes well for Wenger for the run-in. They have the confidence and belief that appears to be disappearing from their fierce north London rivals
