Hu Jintao’s speech interrupted by pro-democracy protester as thousands demonstrate to mark 15 years of Chinese rule A pro-democracy protester interrupted a speech by the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, at the swearing in of Hong Kong’s new leader, while thousands of residents marched to demonstrate against Chinese rule on the 15th anniversary of its return to Beijing’s control. The outpouring of discontent underscored rising tensions between the communist mainland and the city of 7 million, which was returned to China in 1997 after more than a century of British rule.
